So in order to gain maximum protection for your wiring harness, choose the size that will recover (shrink) the most before it is tight on your wires. So if your wire bundle is 7mm in diameter, choose 1\2″ DR-25, which has a fully recovered diameter of 6.35mm. Which will yield the thickest wall to protect your harness. 3\8 will also work but the wall will be significantly thinner, providing less protection and can lead to a stretched or uneven appearance. Getting the best result Getting the best result from your DR-25 usually means a neat consistent looking cable, free from lumps, warps or uneven twists. Consider the following when sheathing your harness in DR-25: Is the wire bundle to be sheathed combed and free of unnecessary twists and crossovers. Are any splices to be sheathed contained under a boot or in an inconspicuous area of the bundle. If the bundle is parallel twisted;  are the twists actually parallel? Not just one wire twisting around the other. And any concentric twists not using filler wires can produce a low spot in your recovered heat shrink. Will this look even and achieve your desired result? Spacing the gaps out can create a more even appearance. Ensure your heat source will reach the full recovery temperature. (175c) Don’t overheat your DR-25. If you get a shark skin texture, bubbling or molten appearance on your DR-25, it’s too hot. For longer runs of DR-25, while longitudinal shrinkage is not specified in the spec sheet, it can shrink in its length when recovering. Add in 5%-10% more in longer runs to compensate and then trim the excess off after recovery. The best tip though, make a test piece! Get your process and heat source dialed in. The small investment in some wire offcuts and 30cm of DR-25 will be worth it before your spoil your project! Working with thinner bundles Sheathing 2-3 thinner wires through a 1\8 or 3\16 DR25 can be difficult. You’ll only get around 30cm in before this sheathing process will become exceptionally frustrating. To speed the process up, crimp your wires onto a thin bit of TIG welding filler rod and feed the rod through the DR-25 first and draw your attached wires through. For branches longer than 900mm, you can either cut the DR-25 into multiple sections,  crimp multiple rods together or use a single larger gauge wire as a draw wire.
